I love the Neweer tt850 speed lights! They are inexpensive, powerful, have excellent recharge time between shots and the batteries last an entire wedding. I have used quite a few different types of flashes and these have by far been my favorite to use.Equipment

I had done newsboy portraits of my nephews years before an the costume finally fit my son. He has such crystal blue eyes that I wanted a shot that would make his eyes just stand out. The simplicity of it just made his eyes pop. I feel bad, but I had to scold my little 2 year old boy so that he would get tears in his eyes. I wanted it to portray all the emotions of homeless, dirty children in the early 1900s that would sell papers just to get by.Editing
Not really. Darkened backdrop to make a little more dramatic. Otherwise just basic raw adjustments- moved blacks down, sharpened, lens correction, etc. I prefer to do most of my work in camera and have crisp, clean photos. In my camera bag

I wet down some newspaper in order to smudge the black on his face. Rub lightly- a little goes a long way. If the child has darker skin, you will need a little more. I think next time I will try to use a snoot, I wanted lighting in just one spot. I used a small softbox, but I think a snoot would be a little more dramatic. Make sure the clothing is simple. To yellow the newspaper, leave it sitting in the sunlight for a few days and it will yellow quickly. Make sure to find an old newspaper or find one that is black and white. The last time I did this photo a few years ago I made a newspaper print backdrop. It wasn't as dramatic but was very cute for children.
