Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Ames, IA. It was near a city pond. There is a hillside where this tree sat.

Time

I took this at dusk.

Lighting

I wanted back lighting so the tree would stand out more. I wanted the colors of the clouds to pop.

Equipment

I had the camera on a tripod. I used my Canon 5D Mark II with my Tamron 17-35mm at 17mm.

Inspiration

I love single, lone trees. I always keep my eye out for them. This one stuck out and I tried to time it so there were clouds and good sunlight.

Editing

Yes, this was an HDR image. I took three shots at different exposures and used Photoshop to merge them together and bring out the shadows and color.

In my camera bag

I have my 70-200mm, 17-35mm, and 100mm macro along with my Canon 5D Mark II.

Feedback

I always get an idea of what I kind of want my shot to look. I will scout out locations and try and get myself to the location when the lighting is just right. But you can plan all you want and the conditions always dictate the shot. So there is a combination of planning and luck. But always keep your mind and eye open for ideas and locations.
