My artwork 'Alice' depicts the literal as well as the figurative emotion of falling into the unknown. This piece celebrates local history in my home town (Berwick, Victoria, Australia), adding another dimension to the meaning behind the piece. The books were from the expansive library of Lord and Lady Casey. Lord Casey was Governor General of Australia and his wife was an artist, author and aviator. The rock face Alice is falling past is part of the Wilson Quarry in the City of Casey. The model was photographed in my studio. This is a Photographic Composite.Time
All the elements were photographed at different times of day, but the crucial aspect of photographing composites is the lighting. All the outside elements (quarry wall, bird, etc) were photographed in overcast light.Lighting
Lighting is a crucial element in composite photography. It must all match. As the light is spilling from the top of the rabbit hole, all of the separate photographs of Alice needed to be shot to match this lighting. Canon 5Diii, 24 - 70mm lens, Wacom Cintiq Companion 2, Tether Tools Pro gear, Studio Strobes, Lighting Modifiers, Adobe Photoshop, Imac Computer, EIZO CG2700 Monitor. Printed on Canson Infinity Photographique Rag with an Epson 3880 PrinterInspiration
Contextually this piece is inspired by the classic tale by Lewis Carol. A tale of a girl that follows a white rabbit down into the unknown, and finds herself falling slowly down an enchanting rabbit hole full of mystery, unsure of where she might land. This piece is as much about falling back in time as it is, falling down into the unknown. A celebration of adventure, an expression of my own journey as an artist.Editing
As a photographic digital artist, half of my work is in the photography and the other half is in the editing. This piece is made up of many layers and many hours in Photoshop. In my camera bag

To create a believable surreal composite there are 6 fundamentals that I consider. Light (Direction, Quality) Scale (Does it match) Perspective (Does it match) Colour/Tone Shadows Focus (Depth of Field) Considering these elements and learning how to control them will lift your work to a new level.
