This portrait of Dacey, one of many, was taken as she looked out the living room window.Time
Deer graze in the meadows near the house in the morning and late afternoon, so that's when she takes to the window to watch.Lighting
I find window lighting most complimentary for portraits and still-life. My living room windows face south/south-east offering many changes in tonal quality as the sun rises and sets. On overcast days the light coming through the windows is particularly soft. A small (or large) reflector adds additional controls.Equipment
I'm a Nikon guy, and use a mid-range zoom for this type of portrait...and, of course, a tripod.Inspiration
Inspiration goes without saying when you love an animal. Her love of connecting to the great outdoors through the living room windows offered endless opportunities to capture her spirit.Editing
The rule is: "If it's worth shooting once, it's worth shooting more than once." In this digital age it doesn't cost a thing. When I find the best from a shoot, most often a crop is all that is needed. HINT: Do not shoot too tight with the camera. In my camera bag
Most of my commercial work is shot at my home/studio. When I go on the road, the packing is based on the shoot's particular requirement. Flexibility requires tripod and monopod --- always.Feedback
In using window lighting always consider time of day and weather conditions. Another important ingredient is the distance your subject is from the window, distance a key factor in contrast.
