Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Watkins Glen State Park, Watkins Glen, New York. It is called the Rainbow Falls and is one of 19 waterfalls you will see throughout 2 mile long gorge.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon in the fall.

Lighting

This was taken in the gorge so the difference in the bright light above the gorge and the deeper shadows below made it a little tricky.

Equipment

This was taken with my first digital camera, a Kodak Easy Share; no other equipment.

Inspiration

This is actually one of the most photographed falls in the gorge but I was inspired by the many different waterfalls and I was learning about F stops so it gave me a great opportunity to play with that.

Editing

I may have done some fine tuning on the sharpness and brightness of the photo.

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon Rebel T3 with two lenses; 18mm-25mm and a 75mm-300mm. I do a lot of birding and wild life photos so the 300mm is important. I also have two filters (which are almost always on) ultraviolet and circular polarizer. I have a very simple tool to clean the lenses and a soft cloth as well. If I know I will need it I take my tripod along. I also have my battery charger.

Feedback

If you are a novice take a few shots on automatic mode first; then look at what the camera used for each setting as a starting point. You can then go to manual mode, set it to those the camera automatically took then start adjusting different settings until you get the shot you are looking for.
