Location
I made a special trip to Boardman Oregon to get to this tree farm. This 25,000-acre land consist of thousands and thousands of hybrid poplar trees; with about 600 trees per acre. Truly a must see! I spent close to 10 hours in the car getting to this location. I stayed over night in a near by hotel, so I could gear up and prepare for what I could only describe as a landscape photographers dream.Time
I left the hotel around 9am and made my way to the trees. I knew I had a lot of ground to cover. Sanding near all those trees was very overwhelming. Sensory overload! I must have taken 500 shots that day. This particular picture was taken on a perfect fall day, just before noon.Lighting
The great thing about these tall trees, is that it blocked a lot of unwanted light. I wanted this picture to have a a warm feel to it. This picture was taken in the fall, and I really wanted to bring out the natural colors. The natural lighting was perfect for what I wanted to capture.Equipment
I used my Canon 60D, MeFoto travel tripod, and my Canon 100mm L Macro Lens. I just love this lens. I use it for landscape, portraits and of course macro shots.Inspiration
I've always loved the fall colors. There is something magical about seeing all the colors of the leaves change. I love the vivid colors, and I really wanted to bring them out in my camera. I had to find the perfect location where I could make this happen. When I heard about Boardman, I knew I had to go.Editing
I processed the RAW file using Lightroom. I made some tone curves to bring lower the highlights and made some adjustments to make the colors pop. I wanted to bring out the detail in the trunks of the trees as well, so I adjusted the shadows and contrast. In my camera bag
Along with my Canon 60D, I always have my kit lens, which is a Canon 18-200mm. This is the first lens I got, and I still use it faithfully. My favorite,(and most expensive to date) is my Canon Macro 100mmL. I have captured some amazing shots with this lens. Next is my Rokinon 24mm 1.4 lens. This lens is my go to lens for night shots. I also have my MeFoto travel tripod snapped to the side of my backpack along with 3 extra batteries, gloves, extra memory cards, and a flashlight.Feedback
As with any shot, take your time. I use to get carried away and would let that shutter button fly. After reviewing my photos later, I learned what I did (or failed to do) to make the shot unique. For this shot, I tried different angles. With so many trees, every direction was different. I had to get the sun in my favor to get that glow at the end of the trees that I was aiming for. My advice is to always take your time, vision what you want your shot to look like, and frame it so it captures the eye.
