Location
This was taken in Bitez, Turkey. A town I spent a couple of winters in. This particular year I stayed 40 kilometres away in Gumushluk and on the way home one day I decided to stop by the town and what was happening. A storm was blowing in and there on the beach was this lone dog that seemed to be posing for me to take the picture so I did. It started pouring moments after taking this photograph.Time
This was around 4 pm. A good time to be out looking considering we were in the golden hour; sunset was at 5pm. Although I swear today that some of the best photographs I have even scene, presents the edge of night reality, which yields such wonderful photographs.Lighting
The light around storms can usually add a lot to any picture. Of course everyone hopes for fingers of light coming out of the clouds but that did not happen even though I was hoping for such a scenario. I consider that everyone who takes photographs around the sun coming up or down over the horizon hopes for some miraculous capture. Clouds are a great help here.Equipment
Unfortunately, I only had a Canon G1X with me, which by the way, was my main camera. You see times were tough and I could not afford better. But I love this camera dearly because it also takes great video footage. Small but not to small. A classic model that revolutionized photography. Great for 16x 20 size prints. I do not know about others but I do want to take my images with a full frame camera. Particularly the Sony A9 or their aR7111. Oh I hope that before I get too much lamer a camera graces my hands so that my last images will be my absolute best as far as detail is concerned. Us old timers will always love the impressionistic nature of film photography that yield a unique character to the print.I can only image that the best silver prints will last the test of time over all other kind of prints because they were made by hand and by a keen alchemist..Inspiration
Oh I was friends with so many stray beach town dogs I decided on doing a portrait series of them. Dogs in that region of Turkey are allowed and encouraged and loved by the locals all feeding them. Unfriendly dogs are taken away. What is just so keen about the Bodrum peninsula is that you can always find a dog buddy to be with you for hikes. Just carry some dog food and feed it to them occasionally along the way and they follow being your best chum. Yeah, When the portfolio idea came to me it was right around this time and this was one of them. The first ones are the easiest sometimes. The follow up images usually require you to stand on your head photographing backward using a mirror. Yes, follow up images can be that hard to do. In my case I was trying to get an illusive portrait that revealed more than what was actually there. I guess if I ever go back I will still try to finish this idea but then again I would want a full frame camera to do it.Editing
Just rudimentary adjustments which yielded a bit of noise and made curse the small sensor. In my camera bag
These days I have a Panasonic G10 that Walter Lassally bought for me. It really works wonderfully for me. I find I gravitate to retro design in cameras. I want an over and under exposure dial on the camera where it should be. Oh yes the question. All I really want is a camera with a wide to tele lens and a 1.7 prime with macro. Xtra batteries. Cleaning cloth. I also have a Lumix G85 and like its rain proofing and it's 5 axis stabilizer for video.Feedback
If you go to Turkey and hang out on any of the beaches during the winter time, a similar image is ready for your closeup.
