Behind The Lens

Location

This image was made while staying at a friends house on the island of Kythnos, Greece The town was called Loutra and dates back in time because of the natural hot springs there.

Time

In order to make the image as romantic as possible I waited until the full moon was in the right place with enough ambient light to to have the scene as luminous as possible. This was about 15 minutes after sun set.

Lighting

To keep the atmosphere warm, I used an old lighting glass to add detail to the floor so one would image their feet being warm and left on an outside light to add to that atmospheric condition. I photographed in AWB and in the over cast setting of the camera to make sure I had the best colors without to much post production tweaking.

Equipment

I used a Canon G1X on a tripod and shot three different exposures which I would combine afterwards for the best luminosity possible. I like a small sized camera so that I can carry it around my neck at all times. I have found whenever you are not ready, you will see the best image and always regret that fact. Murphys law I guess. A small camera does not scare people off either. They figure you are no one important and their dispositions do not change. The G1X also has a good size sensor so making 16x 20 inch prints look superb, well detailed and sharp.

Inspiration

My friend, the owner of the house was planning on selling the place so he asked me to take some memorable images that would make folks want to buy his house. So, I figured I had to make something lovingly romantic with the best possible view at the right time of day. I based this idea on the song Moon River, even though it was the sea. Having certain musical tunes in your head always helps your brain and eyes see in the right manner, I have found. Two chairs and a lantern completed the scene because we all love that time of day with our loved one location. I also like the the choice of the Directors chairs instead of wooden ones which could remind you of a hard seat instead of total relaxation.

Editing

Even though I made maybe 50 different exposures at various settings to achieve this image, upon looking at them, the right series of three was clearly evident. I then compiled the three images with HDR software and slightly varied the exposure with that program for the best possible image. While making the image everything has to be in the right place. I had to fix the location of things a few times to get the right perspective. That is one of the reasons why I love todays modern digital cameras. No need to shoot polaroids to check the image out before shooting with film.

In my camera bag

I do not carry much when when traveling, I like to keep a low profile. Just the G1X and three extra batteries and a few memory cards plus a portable hard drive . A tripod and a lens hood plus some cleaning fluid and thats about it. Wish I had better equipment but currently I cannot afford to have the camera and the couple of lenses I truly desire. Keeping it simple allows you to be regarded as harmless and people respond to you faster in a friendly way. Large bulky cameras always scare people off and get in the way of being really spontaneous. You always have to be ready to take a picture at any time. The best images will slip through your fingers if you have to wrangle with the camera and draw attention to yourself. Plus heavy equipment gets to be more of a drag than a friend after photographing with two of them around my neck over a twenty year period.

Feedback

Many times when you make an image like this, being on location for the right number of days helps to see how the lighting plays with the scene your planning to capture, through out the day. I have found, it always helps having a full moon when on location for more options than just day light. Hence, I try to choose my dates for a location according to the moon when I can. Weather can also be a good friend and photographing during the golden hour is always something so important to do for that radiance cannot be matched. Also photographing in the last of the days light offers less people around and finding just one in a landscape offers a more poignant image. I always look for props and never discard anothers persons ideas. Yes, sometimes a different persons ideas are better and should not be wasted. Always take the image that instantly grabs your attention and then try to outdo that image by changing your perspective. Sometimes you get really lucky!
