I shot this in Lowell, MA in an old mill that has been cleaned up and is now used as retail space. I wanted to do some fun fashion inspired shoot and this place was just amazing.
I am a sucker for a red dress and old locations, so I was a happy happy photographer :) I found the chair in a different room and had to use it (it was heavy!!)

Location
This is a very dark room inside an old mill in Lowell, MA. It used to be a cotton mill and has since been reopened as a community space. We were allowed to go in before it was officially opened to the public so we had the whole floor to ourselves, though we had to work around some power tools and construction materials. It was a wonderful experience walking around in a place with such rich history and beautiful textures. I would love to go back.Time
We had to wake up early to make sure all the equipment made it to the mill. Carrying strobes, modifiers, and ligting stands is not my favorite activity and it does tent to take longer than I expect every time. We started shooting at about 10 am, thought most of the windows in this room were sealed so time of the day was not really a factor.Lighting
I used a large strobe with a rectangular softbox, I wanted to use shadows to create curves and convey specific mood. Single light portraiture is something I am a bit obsessed with :)Equipment
I used a tripod and my trusted Canon 5D with a 70-200 mm lens. Also, I used a small ladder to lift Katie from the floor and create the levitation effect.Inspiration
Most of my work revolves around location family portraiture, so I work natural/available most of the time. I wanted to create something that was completely different, something a little more elaborate and not shy away from somewhat harsh light and dark shadows.Editing
Usually I think it is best to do as little post-processing as possible when it comes to images like this. It is all about the mood and lighting so very little post-processing is needed. I love the dark shadows that are created by a little direct light so all I did in post was control the intensity of the reds in the dress. In my camera bag
I always carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. In case I need additional light I have a couple of Canon speedlites. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me. Also, in the back of my carI always have a small ladder, I never know when I am going to want to do levitation images or to shoot from a higher viewpoint.Feedback
Get creative with your choice of location. One of the most amazing feelings is when you go into a room for the first time and get to create something unique and unexpected. Something unlike what you usually produce. Don't be afraid of colors and shadows, instead use them to shape and control the mood of the image.
