Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Richmond Park just outside London. The Stags and Deer are wild but kept within the boundary's of the park. The Park is on a hill and I came up the hill with the Sun behind me and the early mist wast still lying heavy.

Time

It was just after 7.00am and the Sun was just about peaking over the horizon behind me. The slight lift in the temperature created the low lying mist. The Stag came into the shot on the brow of the hill under an old Oak and was silhouetted against the mist behind it. It didnt stay there too long as it bellowed and move on. As it was early October the Stags are in mating and rutting season, so it is the ideal time to photograph them.

Lighting

The lighting was going to change very quickly as the Sun would burn off the mist as soon as it got clear from the horizon and any cloud. I went to get as many atmospheric shots as possible, so the check on the weather forecast was essential. The mist was particularly heavy at this point with the stag almost lost in it but as it cleared the outline became clearer and the idea of the silhouette was in front of me.

Equipment

I always use my Canon 1D Mk4 with a 300mm F2.8 L series prime lens and a 1/4 Converter. You can get close to the animals but you need to keep a safe distance as they are known to charge and run after people during the Rut. I do not tend to use a tripod but on some occasions a monopod.

Inspiration

Atmospheric shots of the Stag are among my favorite styles, i will never get bored as the light is different every time I go at this time of year. My ultimate aim is to get a Rut between two animals in the golden light of the early Sun.

Editing

I converted to monochrome and boosted the contrast as the original shot had a warm tint due to the early Sun and in my mind it did not look as dynamic.

In my camera bag

If I am shooting with the above equipment my pockets are filled with Memory cards and spare batteries, so on this occasion no bag on my back, but in the car with my hot coffee for when I return

Feedback

If anyone wishing to take great photos of the Stags during the Rut, you need to follow these critical steps; The weather has to be clear and windless over night and the morning clear from clouds until 10.30 at least. You need to get in position before sunrise. Always always respect the animals and give them space, otherwise they can be very dangerous. Lastly enjoy the event, the sounds and the atmosphere, and if you are lucky they will perform in front of you for that great photo opportunity.
