Behind The Lens

Location

I was invited to attend with a view to photograph som birds of prey as an old friend had been given a 'hands on session' at the Bird of Prey centre, Herrings Green Farm, Biggleswade. UK. This raptor is 'Eddie' the Grey Eagle.

Time

Late morning.

Lighting

The weather was overcast but light cloud so no harsh shadows caused any problems.Shot at F8

Equipment

This was shot on my old Canon 1D Mk4 with a 70-200 F2.8 L series lens without IS.

Inspiration

I was taking a number of approach shots as this Eagle flew from a post to a friends baited leather gauntlet. I tracked the bird as he flew past within 10 feet of me, and used short burst high speed shutter. This was my favourite out of the group, and the bird only made two passes. The concentration of the bird coming in for the kill (bait) and the wing position makes it for me.

Editing

Usual curves and slight level adjustment.

In my camera bag

I now use a Canon 5D Mk3 & Canon 1DX2, with an assortment of lenses depending on what I am shooting. EG Canon 300mm L F2.8 IS Mk1, Sigma S 150-600, Canon 24-104mm L IS F4 Mk1, Canon 70-200 F2.8 L non IS, Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 IS, Canon 135mm F2.0 L, Canon 85mm 1.2 L.

Feedback

To get the best Birds in flight shots I find practice makes perfect, specifically when trying to track the bird and not lose the focus, is not easy especially with a heavy lens. I tend to shoot in Manual exposure regarding Shutter Speed and Aperture as the light sky will often under expose the bird. I shoot between F4 and F8 depending on the light available and if I want back to front sharpness via depth of field, as long as the head and eyes are sharp. I prefer a shutter speed that can give slight movement in the wings but not creating any blurred body feathers which is why good tracking is essential. The Cameras fast tracking focus is obviously a plus along with a high multiple shutter option and the 1DX2 is ideal for this. Captive birds give many opportunities to practice, and variety as many will not be native to your location.
