That's extremely effective, Steve - the climber gives a great sense of scale.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye.

Time

This was taken about three in the afternoon on the last day of our trip to Skye.

Lighting

The light was on the nearest rock outcrop, and the weather was closing in over the mountains behind. Two minutes later we were engulfed in heavy snow.

Equipment

Canon 6d, 24-105mm f4 @ 55mm. No tripod or filters. 1/250 @f8, ISO800

Inspiration

I was on a four day trip to Glenoe and the Isle of Skye with two keen photography friends. We'd had a great trip with excellent weather, sunny skies and freshly fallen snow. This was our last location before we headed home the next day. We nearly didn't go because the weather had taken a turn for the worse. I was busy trying to capture some of the spectacular views of the Quiraing and I had my trusty 16-35f4 lens on. I'd walked a bit further round and looked over and saw my friend, Dave Holder, taking some shots on that outcrop. I thought he looked great against the approaching weather and gave a good sense of scale. I shouted Dave to look over and quickly had to switch to the 24-105 to give the composition I wanted. I managed to get a few shots off before the weather came in.

Editing

Processed using my usual Silver Efex Pro workflow. Had to clone out Dave's tripod which was lying on the floor next to him, and also another photographer who was at the very far right of shot.

In my camera bag

I normally travel fairly light these days. I love my Canon 6d, great resolution and performance at higher ISOs. I've recently upgraded from the Canon 17-40 to the newer 16-35f4 IS. This is a super lens, great sharpness across the whole frame and the IS makes a real difference in sharpness at longer exposures. I also always carry the 24-105f4, this is a great workhorse lens and I have no problem with it at all. Apart from that I carry a set of Lee soft nd grads, and a set of 3, 6 and 10 stop Formatt Hitech circular nd filters and a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

Go to Skye! It's a wonderful place for photographers if you ever get chance do make the trip. From incredible but easily accessible mountain views, waterfalls, interesting coastlines it's great. Oh and the food and whisky are great too! In terms of the photo itself, always keep your eyes open for opportunities. This shot wasn't planned in any way, just a scene I saw as I was walking that way and managed to capture it.
