My sister asked me to get some shots of her new baby... In the midst of propping the naked newborn, fixing the curtains for the perfect light and brainstorming, I took this picture of her.

This photo was taken at my younger sister's house, in her living room. She had given birth to my second niece a few weeks earlier and wanted me to get some portraits of the baby.Time
It was mid-day in September... It was very sunny outside.Lighting
There was plenty of natural light coming in though the living room windows; I didn't use a flash and we didn't need to turn any lamps on.Equipment
I shot with a Canon T3, nothing fancy. I can't say for sure which lens I was using at the time, probably the stock lens. I would have loved to have had a 40 or 50 mm for this mini photo session.Inspiration
I started out trying to just get shots of the new baby but, I wanted to have my sister in them, too. I liked this particular photo of her so much, that I decided to crop out my little niece. I feel a little guiltly for some reason but, I wanted the picture to be about my sister.Editing
I never shoot with my camera in black and white mode... I feel like I can always change it to be monochrome but, I can't put color back into a photo. So yes! I heightened the contrast and then made it black and white. In my camera bag
I've learned a lot of what I know about photography, the hard way. So you can probably imagine why I always keep an extra, fully charged battery with me. I have lots of different filters and SD cards, a hood, my stock lens and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm Telephoto Lens. I'm currently trying to figure out which wide angle lens would be best for me. Hopefully that'll be in there soon, too!Feedback
As I mentioned, I tend to learn things the hard way... For this reason, I almost always operate my camera in full on 'Manual' mode. I have found that I also like to keep the auto-focus turned off. By doing this, I am forced to adjust the ISO, the aperture and I have to find the focus on my subject without any of the help from automatic settings. This has taught me so many things. One thing being, the importance of adjusting your camera to your surroundings and the available light.
