One of my favorite places in the world. Amoungst the decay, I can still see the beauty. Amazing image.

Location
I was in Havana, Cuba with a photography tour in December of 2014. On the Wednesday the news came that Cuba and USA were working on lifting the embargo. We were there at an historic time so the next morning a couple of us went out armed with our cameras to photograph the dawning of a new era.Time
This photo was taken at about 6:45 AM the sun had just risen.Lighting
As I said te sun had just risen and it was behind me. We were in the time when there was enough light to see and photograph but it was not high enough to cast shadows.Equipment
Canon 5DMark II. Canon 28- 400 lens and monopod.Inspiration
The boy on his way to school in his uniform looked loke the 1950's, as much of Havana does. He emerged from the desolate past into the dawning of the future.Editing
I converted the image to black and white in photoshop using the gradient map with platinum setting. I like the warmness of the effect better than a straight BW conversion. In my camera bag
Canon 5D MK II. Canon 50D. An assortment of macro, wide and zoom lenses. Tripod or monopod. Panasonic Lumix camera for when I cant set up my Canons and of course my trusty iPhone.Feedback
Be prepared to explore before everyone else is around. If you are photographing in a city that is new to you, go out to where the locals go for their commute to work or school. Visit a market as they are setting up, see the city as if is before the other tourists get up and leave their hotels.
