Late afternoonLighting
I felt the time of day to shoot this image was just right because the sunlight was coming from behind the Starfish creating nice shadows and some contrast with the sunlight. If it had been midday the lighting would not have made this minimalist shot as interesting.Equipment
Canon 60D, Sigma 70-300mm lensInspiration
I love nature and I really like taking simple things (such as this Starfish my son had gotten from a beach store) and experimenting with light and a natural background, In this case the beach! My process and inspiration usually evolves/develops as i go depending on the environment i am in but i knew i wanted a low angle to capture a hint of the ocean behind my subject. If all goes well its rewarding to create something really neat out of something so simple. And also honing skills at the same time!Editing
I added a couple gradient filters to frame the subject better and cloned out a few things in the sand i felt would be too distracting. I wanted all the detail of the starfish to be the main focus. Then i added a little bit of warmth and clarity to the image. In my camera bag
Cameras: Canon 7D, Canon 60D Lenses: Canon 10-18mm wide angle lens, Sigma 70-300mm macro telephoto lens, Sigma 28-105mm lens. External flash - Canon Speedlite 430EX III Remote shutter release,Tripod, extra memory cards & batteries. (bandana for cleaning the lens)Feedback
Mainly keep in mind the time of day if you are going to shoot with natural light, i like morning and late afternoon/evening for something like this. Try several different angles while thinking about how your background is going to work, even with blurred backgrounds it still makes a difference with the end result. Of course keep your subject in focus, tripods help minimize camera shake (especially necessary for macro).Try different things you might be surprised what you come up with and most importantly have fun!
