Location

I took this photo at the Grand Lido Resort in Negril, Jamaica

Time

It was about 9pm

Lighting

There was light on the trees from the bar at the resort behind me and a full moon in a cloudy sky which gave a nice diffuse light

Equipment

Canon 5DM2 Canon 24-105 f/4.0 30 sec at f/16 Velbon tripod and a Really Right Stuff BH-40 ball head

Inspiration

I had been shooting around the resort all day and I wanted to do shoot something different, with the full moon, clouds and all the light at the resort I knew there would be no stars or star trails so I walked around until I saw this framed up before me.

Editing

I removed some of the artificts in the water and adjusted the contrast with curves. I also enhanced the color selectively with Nik Color Efex Pro

In my camera bag

I always have a tripod with me and pretty much what is standard now is the Canon 5DM3 and 1DMIV, and Canon's 16-35 f/2.8, 24-105 f/4, 70-200 f/2.8, 100mm f/2.8 macro, the incomparable 65mm MPE 1X-5X macro and often the 500mm f/4.0. I also always have a set of polarizers for each lens diameter and the 10 stop and 15 stop Mor Slo Singh Ray ND filters.

Feedback

Night exposures like this require the use of long shutter speeds so you want to use a nice heavy tripod and a shutter release, you should also be able to adjust your camera's settings by touch since using a flashlight will mess up your night vision (and irritate anyone else shooting next to you). Make sure you have a good foreground interest as well as the reflections in the water and the night sky. Scout out your spots during the day, when you shoot at night even on a resort that is well lit you can't always see your surroundings well. Looking during the day lets you see what good elements you can add to the image and what to avoid, and where or not to go. Something that draws the eye in is always important, and a shot of just the moon or the Milky Way doesn't keep the viewer engaged. Don't forget to enjoy the night and the place you are in as well, it's always nice to close your eyes after looking at the image a few years down the line and remember not only the beauty of the place but also the feel of those warm breezes and the gentle lap of the ocean on the shore.
