Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from Bakers Beach, it involved quite a bit of a hike down a long set of stairs and down the beach with some rock scrambling.

Time

This was actually mid to late afternoon.

Lighting

The light was pretty harsh, it was mid to late afternoon and despite the clouds the light was pretty strong. Using a 15 stop neutral density filter really helped control the light by timing the exposure to have a cloud through part of the 30 second exposure

Equipment

Canon 5D III, Canon 24-105mm f/4.0 lens, Tripod with a really right stuff BH40 head, Singh-Ray 15 stop (Big Stopper) filter, Polarizing Filter.

Inspiration

I had seen so many beautiful images of this bridge and wanted to do one of my own with the milky water of a long exposure and fog. I didn't get the fog, but I made the water soft and had some nice clouds to work with.

Editing

Converted to monochrome with Nik Silver Efex Pro2 and used luminosity masks to dodge and burn

In my camera bag

It always depends on what I'm going out to shoot but in general I always have my Canon 5D IV, my 24-105, my 70-200 and my 100mm macro lens. I also always bring my Sony A600 Infrared converted camera with me where ever I go. I also always carry a tripod and my hoodman Hood loupe

Feedback

Do your research before going to a place to shoot but nothing beats actually going there and scouting. On any trip try to make sure you have enough time in a location to scout as well as to shoot, try to stay a few days if possible so you can maximize the light and the conditions.
