This photo was taken in Texline, TX - on the border of Texas and New Mexico. I was driving back to Pearland (near Houston, TX) on a trip back home (Colorado Springs, CO). I stopped because I saw this train parked on the tracks next to the statue in the shape of Texas. I thought...maybe I'll take some neat photos for my kids and wife. Kind of a trivial stop really. The sun was going down, so I knew I wanted to get right on it. I notice that something I read about was happening at that moment. That was...as cars were driving by, they were "painting light" onto the train. So I slowed down my actions and decided to use longer exposure so I could capture the "painting." So glad I did. this was my opportunity to attempt long exposures I had read about. The next thing I knew, the weather started changing and then the lightning was making a presence. I was beside myself! So I changed the focal point to capture the train and some periphery. That was mostly because I wasn't able to keep the statue in the frame AND get the lightning at the same time. I took several 30 second exposures. This was the last one and I KNEW that I had gotten something special. Several things happened at the same time...people doing their part with cars driving by, God doing his part by supplying a spectacular light show, and there was me...Time
The time was approximately 8:40PM. Initially, the weather was calm, but quickly changed into what you see.Lighting
The neat thing was that over the course of the 30 second exposure there were 2 bolts of lightning that happened about 8 seconds apart.Equipment
At that time, I used my Canon 30d. I've since upgraded, but it did a great job! Of course, I had a tripod and shutter release. Fortunately, the "light" was supplied by cars driving by as well as the lightning.Inspiration
The creative influence is that by making the photo back and white, that it would have an old timey look to it. Almost an eery and ghostly coldness to it.Editing
I did very little post processing to it. I DID go back and update the noise reduction and sharpness in order to make it a little more crispy. I like this result far better! In my camera bag
I shoot mostly sports, so I have a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm f/.2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 50mm f/1.8Feedback
The first thing to do is have patience and be prepared to tweak. Think on the fly. Rely on your training or info from articles. Turn off Image stabilization. Try different perspectives and angles unless what you have in head is being represented as you planned. Still, what you "think" may not work out, so consider a couple of options. You can't stage lightning, so you have to move and think fast. Did I mention be patient?
