Wow! At first I just saw the incredible reflection; then before seeing your title I saw the fish! This is amazing!

Thank you. It was amazingly calm the night when I took this photo and a very bright moon for natural lighting.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a fishing trip on Lac Sasseginega in Quebec, Canada.

Time

It was a still, moonlit night which made a perfect reflection of the rock in the water.

Lighting

This was all natural (moon) light, no flash.

Equipment

We had to portage into this area so we were packing light. I only had an old, inexpensive Epson PhotoPC 3000Z camera with me to take this photo.

Inspiration

There was no real forethought to taking this photo. We had passed this rock formation several time before and I always like the pattern of the cracks in it. Seeing the perfect reflection of the rock on this particular night was all the inspiration needed.

Editing

I did have to do a little post-processing using OnOne Photo Suite 9. The original photo had the top half of my fishing pole in view a little bit to the right of the rock. I was able to edit it out without it being really noticeable. You would probably have to know where it originally was to be able to tell the edit was done. The original was also in color. Because of the dim lighting there was not much color so converting to black and white just made sense.

In my camera bag

My primary camera is a Nikon D5100. I have two lenses that I normally use; a AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G and a AF-S Nikkor 70-300 mm 1:4.5-5.6 G. I have several different filters but I am just learning how and when to use them. I always carry a spare battery for the camera and the battery charger. The last thing I carry is a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 flash, which I very seldom use. I would like to upgrade some of this equipment but being retired and on fixed income I will probably have to make due with what I have.

Feedback

The only advice I can give for capturing something similar to this is don't leave home without some sort of camera. You never know when an opportunity like this will come your way. This shot was taken with an old, relatively inexpensive point-and-shoot camera and I have seen a lot of very nice photos on ViewBug that were taken with cell phone cameras.
