Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a historic cemetery in Rochester NY. It was meant to be a Halloween shoot and was the perfect setting.

Time

We actually took this in the middle of the day. The mausoleum in the background was covered by the trees to help eliminate some light and create some interesting shadows.

Lighting

This is all natural light. No flash, no strobes, just the sun. I did not even use a reflector. The light coming through the trees above was perfect and I was able to position the model perfectly to get the exact light I wanted.

Equipment

Canon xsi camera and a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens.

Inspiration

My model, Jessica, contacted me about doing a shoot. We had worked together before. She wanted to do something for Halloween and I love doing effects and compositing in my photos so I was all on board for it.

Editing

I did some general lighting tweaks in Lightroom then composited in the smoke, hand, and did black and white conversion in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera of course and I recently purchased a new Canon 7D mkII. I keep my 17-50 2.8, 50mm 1.8, and my 70-300 lenses in my bag. You never know when you want to use them. I also keep a handful of filters, mainly polarizer and ND. I do not always bring my flash but lately I have been just because I don't have it when I need it. I would rather have it and not use it. So I pretty much pack a full arsenal.

Feedback

Just two. 1. Try to envision the photo before you take it. I saw the Mausoleum and right away thought of the old Frankenstein posters and knew that is what I wanted to mimic. 2. Take lots of photos. It is hard to tell everything on a 3" screen so I always take multiple images so I am guaranteed to have one that is perfect.
