Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the heart of the Black Hills where I live.Time
I was on location at 6am.Lighting
With the sun rising behind the horses and riders, silhouettes were the perfect choice. Exposing for the sky was essential.Equipment
I shot with my canon 50D and my canon 55-250mm lens on a tripod. Nothing fancy as far as equipment goes.Inspiration
I took this photo during a workshop. While taking photos of the riders riding was fun, my favorite shots came during those quiet moments when the rider interacted with his horse between rides. I think waiting for that moment when the rider and horse met eyes really gave it emotional impact. I have a real connection to animals, so when I see others connecting with them in a kind and gentle manner, I am very moved and enjoy capturing it on film.Editing
All of my post processing was done in Photoshop elements 10. I enhanced the color of the sky and selected and darkened the silhouette for more impact. In my camera bag
My Canon 50D, Canon 55-250mm, 15-85mm and 60mm macro lenses, 100mm macro, and 85mm portrait lens. ND filters and circular polarizer. Lots of lens cloths as I seem to lose one every time I go out shooting. Paper and pen. Wet wipes for when I get into poison ivy and a cell phone for when I get lost!Feedback
The biggest thing is to get up early and be ready on location and set up before sunrise. It's amazing how quickly that sun rises and that dramatic light passes. Look for simplicity in compositions and EXPOSE FOR THE SKY!
