Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Time

In the winter, I often go looking for elk in the early mornings in both Wind Cave National Park and Custer Sate Park. This particular morning the elk were scarce, but the there were plenty of buffalo and if you stop your car, they quickly surround you trying to get in to lick the road salt that accumulates on your car.

Lighting

Shooting in the snow, the morning light seems to work out best before the sun get to high.

Equipment

I used a Canon 50d and a 50-250mm lens. When shooting wildlife (especially buffalo) I generally stay in my car and prop my camera with a sandbag in the window.

Inspiration

I love shooting the buffalo in the winter. The dark of their fur against the white snow can be tricky to shoot, but if the light is right can make for amazing photos. And of course, a youngster trotting next to it's mama is always fun to see.

Editing

I did the usual post processing, adjusting color, saturation, sharpening, cropping and dodging and burning as needed.

In my camera bag

I generally carry a zoom lens, a wide angle lens, and a macro lens when out shooting wildlife. I also have a graduated ND filter and circular polarizer, lots of lens cloths, and gum. You'd be surprised what a bit of sticky gum can accomplish.

Feedback

Be patient. If an animal is tolerant, stick with it. I can't tell you how many times I've moved on too quickly and later regretted it.
