Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Bear Lake, Estes Park Colorado. I'm a self taught photographer. The colors of the fall have always caught my eye, even as a child and will make any excuse to go into the mountains to shoot them.

Time

I shot this around 11am in mid September. In my opinion there isnt a bad time a of day (other than night) to take pictures in the fall.

Lighting

This is all natural light. i try to use as much natural light as i can. I find it more challenging to get a great shot buy just depending on the weather.

Equipment

I shoo t with a Nikon D5100. This pictur was taken with a 18-55mm lense. I don't have money for any nicer fancy lenses, so i try and gt the best photo with what i have.

Inspiration

Over the years i have always loved looking at other photographers pictures of aspen groves in the fall and winter. Last year i set out ans was determined to make my own. It took sever weeks and hundreds of photos before i found the perfect spot. I loved that it was still early enough in the season to capture all of the colors, greens, yellow, orange.

Editing

Since the area i was in was so dense and i wanted a wider panoramic shot, i had to do this in a few shots. I took about 3 main photos and a bunch of others. I ended with merging and layering the photos together to get the look, feel, and length that i wanted. Other then getting all the pieces together like a puzzle, i didn't do much else to the photo. I increased the contrast, and color density a bit just to make the colors pop.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D5100, i only have two lenses. They are the standard lenses that came with my camera. 1 18-55mm and 1 55-300mm lenses. I have an old tripod from my dad. That just lives in my car just in case. Other then the 2 lenses and the main camera there really isn't much in my bag. Maybe a couple of snacks. I hope to add more to my bag soon when i have the money. but for now im happy with what i have and what im able to do with it.

Feedback

I think anyone and take a great picture if they really want to. I am trying to figure out how to become a professional landscape photographer and how to take better pictures. My advise is start out buy looking at other peoples work. Find something that you really like, whatever inspires you and gets your creative juices flowing. You might not get into national geographic over night but you wont know if you don't try. just grab a camera a go shoot. shoot everything and shoot often. play with EVERY SINGLE setting on your camera. Don't be afraid of manual. And last of all just be happy. don't worry if someone doesn't like your work, or if you don't get that perfect shot on the first round. Just go out and do what you love. I think a lot of people forget that.
