Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken along the Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park, Maine. We were touring the park and came around a bend when I saw this. We screeched to a stop, and I jumped out to capture the scene. Fortunately there was very little traffic.

Time

2:45 PM on a cloudy, rainy July day.

Lighting

Being cloudy, the light was not ideal, but here it worked to erase the background so that the road and tree become the focus of the image.

Equipment

Nikon D5100, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens, handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

Acadia is an amazing National Park, and we were fortunate to visit it. Having limited time, my goal was to capture images that would remind me of the mood of the day we were there; this scene just encompassed everything that we immediately loves about the area.

Editing

I use LR for basics, and tend toward sharp, contrasty images. I then used PS to added color dodging on the right, some curves work to darken the left side as well as adjust color balance throughout, and some final blending of a masked, toned layer to enhance the "glow" in the image.

In my camera bag

Nikon D5100, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens, Nikon 105 f/2.8 lens, speedlite.

Feedback

I am still learning, every day. I try to pay attention to my surroundings and look for composition. The potential for a scene may not be immediately evident, but think about what might be, rather than just what is, and explore.
