The army crawl section was awesome: barbed wire over a dirt field with raised humps and troughs, and someone with a hose dumping water nonstop on the area. Lots of mud! I loved watching the different techniques used by the race participants, and just tried to get shots of them so that I could see their face. In this image everything just came together: water, mud, position and expression.Editing

The long lens was absolutely crucial for this event; I wouldn't use anything less than 200mm even though I was within a few yards of the racers at some events. I think the facial expressions are the best part of something like this, so a zoom is key. Also, the racers move fast; it's important to move around to find the best angle for each shot.
