I think of myself as a hobbyist photographer. I've taken a couple photography classes at the local community college, but I mostly I love to experiment! This photo was taken in the living room of our old home in front of a large set of windows.Time
It was cold day in February, 2013 and here in the Midwest, February can seem brutally long and dreary. We can get a bit of cabin fever. What's the perfect cure? Impromptu photo shoot with resident 4 year old, my boy Jesse. This shot was taken at 10:15 a.m.Lighting
I wanted my little "Super Man" to have some natural light on his face and was intrigued by the way the window reflected in his glasses. I experimented with other lights in the room on and off and settled with having the one light in the background turned on, hoping to achieve a moody glow.Equipment
This was taken with my Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, f/2.8, nothing else was used. Great little camera that I used before I got my Canon EOS Rebel T3.Inspiration
Being a photography enthusiast since I was a kid, I have always loved perusing photography books from the library, as well as photo magazines. Portraits tend to be my favorite. These days, it's so easy to enjoy a world of photography online at your fingertips. For this particular shot, I had seen very similar shots while browsing Pinterest. I'm a mom of 5 kids and I love the idea of capturing them in the midst of one of their ever-changing childhood obsessions. Stopping time and preserving those sweet memories.Editing
For this shot I wanted some drama...so I played with Photoshop and I actually used a combination of filters from Pixlr.com as well as messing with the exposure, saturation and contrast in Photoshop. The original is very blah, boring house setting...I hope I achieved a little drama by going a little over board. Super Man is a comic book hero after all...I wanted a little over-saturation and contrast. In my camera bag
Being an amateur, I've got the basics...Canon EOS Rebel T3, 18-55 lens, 55-250 lens, extra SD cards, extra battery, mini tripod, and a remote shutter, so mom can get into those family group shots! Oh, and I throw that old Canon PowerShot in my purse for back-up!Feedback
For me, when I try to get a portrait of one of my kids, I think it's most important to be patient and flexible...I may have something specific in mind when I start and if I let go a little and work with my little one...I may end up with something quite different and many times much better even than what I had originally had in my mind. Get a feeling for his mood and play off of it.
