Location
This was taken at Historic Yates Mill Park in Raleigh, North Carolina.Time
It was around 4:30 in the afternoon.Lighting
It was just into the "golden hour". The trees in the background were bathed in a warm/soft light and it gave a nice depth to the scene.Equipment
I used a Canon 60D with a EF-S 18-135mm lens. The shot was hand held.Inspiration
I originally went to photograph the mill itself but there were too many people. So my husband and I went for a stroll on the grounds and as we were crossing the wetlands boardwalk this photo opp presented itself. The sun came down and bathed the background in a golden light and created great reflections in the water. It screamed to be photographed...hence the title X-marks the spot.Editing
Not too much for this image. It needed to be straightened a bit and I boosted the saturation and contrast slightly. In my camera bag
My Canon 60D and Canon lenses are always with me. They are an 18-135mm, 50mm, and 70-300mm IS. I also carry a fully charged extra battery pack, a Vello free wave remote, lens cloth, and a neutral density filter.Feedback
I think for landscape or nature photography the time of day you shoot is important to achieve the most flattering image. Lighting is everything! So a little bit of planning and also being flexible helps. If you can't get the shot you want.. move your feet and look around, other opportunities will usually present themselves. As Ansel Adams said "You don't take a photograph, you make it" Happy Shooting! :)
