I took this shot at the Gold Coast Sand pumping jetty Queensland Australia.Time
I was up at 3:30 am, unable to sleep so i sent a text message to a friend (also an armature photographer) and suggested we go and take some photos. we drove to the Gold Coast from Brisbane about an hours drive. we discussed several venues for the morning shoot but settled on the sand pumping jetty as we hade not been there before.Lighting
The sun had just risen and was just about to pop out from behind the cloud on the horizon, but I still had the light reflections on the water from jetty lights along with the yellow in the sky i thought would make an interesting combination.Equipment
I was using my old Nikon D3200 with a cable release on a tripod. I still find myself reaching for this reliable camera even though my new camera is an Nikon D810.Inspiration
When we arrived it was still dark, we walked around and found a few good angles for the photos. I was looking to get a shot that a bit different than just another photo of a pier. i was a bit lucky to get a god scattering of cloud at that time of day.Editing
when I took this shot I took three shots at different length exposures, i had to do this manually as the D3200 doesn't have any bracketing facility. after bringing these pics into light room for minor adjustment I exported them to Photomatix HDR software and merged themIn my camera bag
in my bag I have usually carry a Nikon 24-70 and sigma 17-35 however the lens i like to use the most is just a Nikon 50mm 1.8 prime as it is very light and has exception quality.i also have the usual stuff like ND filters and grads remote shutter release etc.Feedback
I think the best advice that someone that has limited knowledge like me could give is to remember that it is all about going out and enjoying yourself, the best thing you can do is get out with your camera and start shooting. Don't spend your life wishing you had that new lens or a better camera, just get out out there with the gear you've got. i also find it helpful to imagine in my minds eye what the shot will be.
