Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture down the front beach in my home town of Bowen Australia. I had been chasing my kids around for about an hour as they were swimming in the ocean and jumping off rocks trying to improve my photography skills and capture a few memorable moments.

Time

Living in lovely tropical north Queensland means late September has lovely weather with beautiful lightening. This was taken about 4:30 in the afternoon, just sitting on the stairs looking out towards the ocean in the shade of the coconut trees.

Lighting

Being later in the afternoon the sun was getting low with a lovely slow glow and we were sitting in a lightly shaded area which topped it off.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D5000 with a basic nikon 18-105mm lens. It was hand held as the kids never sit still for more than a minute and no flash as I was practising using only natural light.

Inspiration

I had been trying my best to improve my skills from an amateur to something more while trying to get some lovely photos of my kids to hang in my house. My son finally sat still for more than a minute and I just loved the natural expression on his face and the lightening was just right. I am so happy I clicked at the right time as a second later the goofy expression was back and off he went.

Editing

I do use post-processing but being newer at it I use action sets from Paint the Moon. I believe I used the luminosity set for this one, with some little tweaks from me. There wasn't much actually done to it, just punched it up to closer represent what I saw on the day. It was then sharpened.

In my camera bag

My bag is not quite big enough for my whole three lens so it depends on what I am doing. I have a Nikon D7100 body now, with my go to Nikon 18-105m lens usually on it. For anything I need a bit of zoom I take my Nikon 55-200m and occasionally I take my recently acquired Nikon 50mm 1.8 but I am still getting used to this as it is my first prime lens and I am very used to being able to zoom.

Feedback

To capture something like this having a willing subject would be helpful but having good lighting under shade, and nailing the focus will set you well on the way to capturing a great photo. Then concentrating on a great composition, I favour the rule of thirds, then practise, practise and practise some more. Then when you get home critic all your photos even ones that you will delete so you know where you went wrong and right.
