Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo along the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN

Time

This was taken about 20 minutes before sunset.

Lighting

I wanted to use the cast shadows as one of the main subjects of the shot. So by utilizing some back lighting of some objects with the late day sun, they really came out nice.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 and a 14-24 Nikkor f2.8 lens. It was photographed hand held with no flash.

Inspiration

The inspiration was momentary. I was simply walking around the city looking for things to photograph and knew the sun was soon to set. So I went towards the river to have a nice open area to photograph from and while walking through the riverside park noticed these beautiful trees and cannons casing lovely shadows and just went with it.

Editing

This was processed using three bracketed exposures to make a HDR or High Dynamic Range image with Photomatix Pro and then finished fine touching in Adobe Photoshop CC.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Nikon D810 and D3x camera bodies. My 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor lenses along with a Zeiss 100mm f2 Makro Planar. This way I am covered for most types of shots I would run into while out and about. I do carry an 85mm f1.4 Nikkor for portraits occasionally or my big 800mm f5.6 Nikkor when I am photographing wildlife.

Feedback

Even though I photographed this on a whim, which shows you should always be ready for the random, I really try and plan a lot of my work out. I scout locations using Google Earth and plan angles and times using The Photographers Ephemeris. These are both free tools at a photographers disposal and will help you plan work out much more efficiently and you will waste a lot less time in the field. Make sure to utilize other peoples photographs from the area you are traveling to get an idea of angles and different times of the year. In this specific photos situation, make sure you are ready to photograph from a different angle. I was laying on my stomach when I took this shot. I can't imagine this would have been nearly as good of a shot if I would have been standing.
