Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Zabriskie Point—part of the greater Death Valley National Park in California.

Time

Taken between 4 - 5 p.m., this photo was the product of an unplanned stop in Death Valley National Park. When I saw the sign along some California highway, I suggested we make the turn. I remembered the name Death Valley from a photographer’s beautiful photo on Flickr.

Lighting

As it was later afternoon, the sun was neither harsh nor directly above. The clouds may have also helped.

Equipment

This was shot handheld using a Canon T2i with a Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens.

Inspiration

The location is easily one worth capturing, but I was especially drawn to the people dwarfed by landscape. They provided a sense of scale, adding to the drama of the image.

Editing

I likely used the built-in Microsoft photo editing software on my laptop to adjust brightness, shadows, and contrast.

In my camera bag

My equipment is simple: Canon EOS body (now the T7i), a fixed general lens (currently the Canon 28mm 2.8), and a wide angle lens (Canon 10-18mm). I take photos for fun and usually when I travel, so I keep it light.

Feedback

Go in the early morning or later afternoon for better lighting and try to provide a sense of scale.
