Location
I took this photo in a little field just outside my home about a mile away. I kept passing by the sunflowers and they were so tall and sprite this summer that I had to pull over. I just happened to have my camera that day and I moved over to a median and crossed a few lanes of traffic to get the shotTime
Sadly it was later than the usual sunrise when I take my landscape pictures. I say sadly because the lighting is generally not as good. Shooting with my 85mm I was able to get my subject and blur out the rest of the image quite well.Lighting
The lighting was actually still great at this time of day. I usually don't shoot past 9 am but these sunflowers still had pretty light on them. The wind was calm so I was able to grab a sharp shot. It was around 10 am and the flowers were still and showing off their beautiful colors.Equipment
I did not have my tripod so I shot this hand held with my D600 Nikon and 85mm 1.8D lens. The lens has a manual aperture ring and it's very sharp. I love the bokeh it produces and the colors are always accurateInspiration
The solitude of this flower gave me the inspiration to take it. I was very taken by it's stature and strength that it possessed. It was just sitting there, unwavering, towering above the rest. I had to take a shot.Editing
I post processed using lightroom. I turned up the yellows and also added some film grain. I wanted this photo to look classic, but processed as well. I was not afraid of bleeding yellow into the blacks so I also used some cross-processing to lighten the exposure with color. In my camera bag
I always carry my D610 with my primes and 70-200 2.8 Tamroon zoom. My favorite primes are the 50mm 1.4 Nikon and the 85mm 1.8D Nikon. Shooting mostly landscapes I generally have my tripod and ball head with me plus my Vello wired trigger.Feedback
Stop and take the time to shoot. Normally I would have blown by this scene in my car but this day I had my equipment and thought about the image before taking it. If I hadn't foreshadowed what kind of image I wanted I never would have pulled over. Just keep shooting, sometimes you get duds but sometimes you get wall hangers.
