This photo was taken at the Mabula Game Reserve, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Time

It was late afternoon, the magical hour just before sunset. In Africa the sun sets very quickly, so it is all about timing.

Lighting

Light is a [photographers friend or enemy - make it your friend.

Equipment

Photo taken with a Canon EOS 400D. Lens: Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6. Hand held as it is very difficult to use a tripod in a safari vehicle. No flash used. ISO 250, Aperture: f/10, Exposure: 1/500

Inspiration

The vastness of the African plains which had turned yellow as a result of the harsh preceding winter. This Oryx contrasted against the yellow grass just popped out at me.

Editing

Used Apple Aperture 3 for some tweaking on a Jpeg file.

In my camera bag

Canon 60D or 5D along with an assortment of lenses.

Feedback

Always be on the lookout for photo opportunities, be patient and have a camera available. Wildlife photography is always about chance, with little time for setup. Be ready to take the shot as quickly as you can, as the scene will change within seconds. Shoot RAW for greater image control.
