Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at a national rally championship event in Romania, at Surduc Lake.Time
It was around mid day on a hot end of May 2012. I remember walking around the stage 3 or 4 hours before the start time in search of the best corner for my shots.Lighting
The conditions were heavy, the harsh light of the middle of the day making hard contrasts and dark shadows.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D90, with an Nikkor VR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I was looking for a corner where the first 4 or 5 drivers will spread on the tarmac the gravel from inside of the corner. I knew this will force the following drivers to go sideways around the corner and even some of them to drive trough the age like this one did. When I saw the car coming right towards me the firs instinct was to run away, but I'm glad I didn't.Editing
I had to reduce the contrast a little bit because of the harsh light and I did reduce also the exposure with 1 stop.In my camera bag
Normally at rally events I have in my bag besides my old D90 camera, an Nikkor 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6G lens and a telephoto lens like Nikkor VR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G or Sigma 70-300 mm.Feedback
I think the most important thing on shooting sports is to have a good knowledge of the sport you want to shoot. This includes the rules, the action that take place and even the athletes in the field if it's possible. In this way you will be able to stay safe and to anticipate the action that will take place in front of your lens.
