Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Bodnant Garden's, North Wales, way back in 2007 or 2008.

Time

It was quite late in the morning, just before Lunch time and as the light was very harsh I decided to do some close up photography of the flowers surrounding me. But as I got to the pond the dragonflies were very active and I tried to photograph them instead.

Lighting

The light was very harsh as it was nearly lunchtime, so wide angle shots would not have worked. I enjoyed the challenge of trying some close up photography instead.

Equipment

At the time I used a Canon 350D and a 50-250mm sigma lens. I did not use a tripod but laid on the floor and rested the camera on the edge of the pool to get as close as I could to the dragonflies.

Inspiration

Watching the dragon flies busying themselves flying on and off the water lilies. It was relaxing to watch and very challenging to capture. I do enjoy a challenge and I think the fact that people were watching me lying on the floor gave me a bit of a mischievous feeling.

Editing

I did not much post process the image at all. I cloned out some ( what I thought ) dirt and such like from around the petals, but was told afterwards that them were probably the eggs this dragonfly was lying at the time of its photo being taken. Un-experienced at the time I did not keep the original file, so this image could never be used in a true nature contest.

In my camera bag

I know always carry my Canon 700D, a Sigma 10-20mm, a Sigma 17-70mm, a Canon 50-250mm lens and a close up lens. A tripod, lens cloths, variety of filters and 2 fully charged torches. Remote release, spare camera batteries and sd cards are also a necessity to be carried around.

Feedback

Patience. As much as a photographer can muster. And a strong bladder as one might find themselves that nature is calling right before the best of shots.
