Location
This photo was taken at Ediza Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Northern California.Time
After staying up late taking pictures under moonlight, I got up before sunrise to run around the lake for the first light.Lighting
A forest fire caused by lightning the day before caused smoke to settle on the peaks. The orange glow filled the basin as the moon set behind the mountains.Equipment
This was taken on a Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm stock lens. As I was backpacking, I did not bring a tripod with me, but the situation lends itself to one.Inspiration
I was in the Ansel Adams Wilderness after all. I experimented with black and white, but stuck with color for this particular version as the orange glow was so predominant.Editing
There was no major post-processing to this photo. I only attempted to bring out the colors seen in the moment. In my camera bag
I am now carrying a Nikon D7000, 18-140mm lens, 35mm f/1.8 prime lens, and Dolica 65" tripod.Feedback
If you stumble into a situation that seems overwhelming, take your time. As this was one of my earlier photos, I had trouble taking it all in and getting the shot I wanted. When you are inexperienced and under a time constraint such as a sunrise, you begin taking as many photos as you can. This easily leads to poor framing and composition as those are no longer the primary objective. 20 good photos with 2 great shots is a lot more satisfying than 200 photos with the wrong settings accompanied by 10 okay photos. Better yet, when you are having trouble getting to sleep at night you might as well go ahead and think of every photographic scenario possible. Then when you finally encounter that moment you will be prepared. Only you won't have your camera with you. :)
