Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on Plum Island on the coast of Massachusetts.

Time

I took the photo at 2:30 pm, because of the storm, the single road to the island was flooded at high tide, so I needed to wait till about an hour after peak.

Lighting

Nothing, just a snowy, cold day.

Equipment

Nikon d300 with a 10-20 sigma lens, that's it.

Inspiration

I was covering the story on erosion on the island, I heard on the scanner that a house had fallen in the surf. I waited in my car for the fire dept to open the road, which was flooded. It's was cold about 20 degrees, and pretty windy. One of the neighbors, let me on his deck ( and he let me warm up in his house), what I remember is that the deck was over the crashing waves and moved slightly as they broke. If you look on the left along the railing you can see my hand print where I put my hand down when a large wave hit.

Editing

minimal, cropped a bit, adjusted a bit i levels, as a news photographer I seldom do more than that.

In my camera bag

2 nikon DSR, a d610, and a D500, I keep a D300 in my car for bad weather, sigma 10-20 2.8, nikon 17-35 2.8, nikon 70-200 2.8, a sb800 flash, a mono pod, rain gear, snacks, compass, flash lite, notebook, golf pencils, and something to read. I keep a bunch of stuff in my car that I don't carry around a fisheye, a 170-500 sigma, Cowboy Lights.

Feedback

Don't be afraid of NO, ask questions. "Can I use your deck?" "Can I climb up there?" " Did you see what happened?' "Do you know who lives there?" Be polite , but be persistent.
