SunsetLighting
With interest of preserving the beautifu sunset in the background amd properly exposing these sunflowers, I used an external flash which I pointed at a wall 2 feet behind me. This allowed the light to reflect in a difused way and helped properly expose both the subject and the background.Equipment
I used a Canon 20d on a tripod with a 55mm 1.8 canon lens as well as a speedlight flash attached on camera.Inspiration
These flowers were given to me in mourning of my fathers suicide. This image was taken on the day of his memorial with the notion of "even though it gets dark, the sun keeps on rising"Editing
I processed this photo in lighroom, I focused on bringing iut the beautiful color and detail in the clouds as well as the flowers and tried to make the picture look like it was on fire.In my camera bag

Really utilize the environment around you. Are you close to a wall? Will bouncing the light off the wall difuse the light? Try taking multiple shots with the flash at different angles and with different shutter speeds. It is normal to try shooting the same subject multiple times before you get one amazing shot that you are looking for.
