Location
The photo was taken on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.Time
The photograph was made at mid-morning, when the shadows cast by the concrete beams and wooden lattice work were most dramatic.Lighting
For maximum contrast between the light concrete walls and the shadows forming patterns on them, I intentionally chose a day with full, bright sunlight.Equipment
The photograph was taken with a Nikon 14-24mm lens mounted on a tripod-mounted Nikon D800E camera.Inspiration
Almost every day, I walk past the spot where the photo was taken. Utah Valley University has an interesting, modern architecture. The shadows cast by the massive concrete beams and wooden latticework on one of the buildings are intricate and ever-changing as the sun moves across the sky. I decided I needed to make a special trip to the campus at mid-morning on a weekend, when the shadows are most dramatic and there are few people around.Editing
The photo file was converted to black and white and adjusted for contrast with PhotoShop. In my camera bag
My Nikon D800E and Nikon 14-24mm lens are my favorite photographic combination. I own several other lenses, as well as a couple of mirrorless cameras, but if the shot is particularly important to me, it's always the D800E that I reach for.Feedback
I've always been intrigued with the notion that the objects around us, and particularly our architecture, serve as inadvertent calendars and sundials. The shadows cast by these structures shift from hour to hour and from season to season, marking the passage of time. They are also subjects often overlooked by photographers, though they present a rich treasure trove of photographic possibilities.
