Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local bar. I was shooting some photos for a local band just starting out and this was one of their first gigs!

Time

This was taken in the evening when the bar was hoping! It was such a fun atmosphere to be taking pictures in. The band was so in tune with their music, that they were able to completely ignore me, so I could get some great candid shots. This was also one of my first live band photo sessions, so it was a cool experience for me!

Lighting

Oh the lighting was perfect! The stage lights provided everything I needed! The lights were bright and when the lead singer moved close to the mic, it illuminated his face just right that I was able to capture this shot!

Equipment

I didn't own a proper flash or tripod at the time, so this was shot entirely with my Canon t2i camera and a steady hand. I had to keep the shutter speed low because it was dark in the bar except for the stage lights. It was a tricky situation, but this shot came out really well.

Inspiration

I was moving around the stage, snapping pictures. Then the lead singer leaned into the mic and the light hit his face just right. He had such passion in his movements and in his presence. I wanted to capture that moment and that passion in a photograph.

Editing

Yes, I post processed this a little. All I did was lighten it up a bit and turn it into black and white. I don't believe in over processing photos. If it isn't good originally, I don't use it at all.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always carry my camera, a telephoto lens, and a macro lens. I also have a rain sleeve (just in case!), although I haven't had to use it yet.

Feedback

My advice would be to try and put yourself in your subject's shoes in a sense. Feel what they are feeling. You will be able to capture something with much more emotion and feeling than if you snap a picture just because you think that's what people want to see. Images that were captured with passion behind them, are so much more powerful. Also, you don't need a lot of fancy equipment to capture a great photo, despite what people may tell you!
