Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a back road in New Hampshire. My husband and I love to explore the back roads because you never know what you will see

Time

This was taken mid afternoon, my husband and I usually don't get up till late as we both work evening shift. When we are off we love to get out and explore, often we don't even know where we are going when we set off but its a great way to practice my photography, taking back roads is where you find the hidden treasures

Lighting

If I remember it was mid afternoon and the light from the sun was shining through the trees lighting up the old van

Equipment

I used a hand held Canon 6D with with an EF 75-300mm f4/5.6 III lens. No flash or tripod. That lens is probably my cheapest yet most used lens. I don't think you have to have expensive gear to take good photos. The Canon 6D camera is great too in all sorts of lighting conditions.

Inspiration

I love old rustic things, whether its an old car or truck or a rustic landscape. Vermont and New Hampshire is full of old, rustic farms and machinery and old trucks and cars can be found everywhere. Seeing this truck being reclaimed by nature drew me in, If iI remember rightly I almost drove past it as it was set back among the trees, I had to turn the car around and go back to make sure of what I saw. Something I do a lot, my husband is getting used to it now. Not sure he is used to the sudden stops yet lol.

Editing

The only post processing was to crop the frame a little and straighten it, and lighten it up a little. I am a little OCD when it comes to straightening pictures, even just a little off annoys me

In my camera bag

I have two Canon cameras, a 5D mk ii and a 6D. I have a 75-300mm lens, a 50mm portrait lens, 24-70mm and a 100-400mm, I have a Speedlite Flash, 9 batteries (I never run out) micro SD and CF cards, macro extensions, a camera rain cover, cleaning cloths and lens cleaner. I also have two tripods and a monopod and a remote shutter release oh and two lens hoods. I also have a drone but I'm only just learning how to operate it.

Feedback

My advice to capture something similar is to get out and explore the back roads where you live, or old junk yards and abandoned buildings. There you will find hidden treasures. Try to get out often and practice. One thing I do often is set myself a scavenger hunt. Sometimes as I'm leaving my youngest will suggest an item to photograph. Make a list of similar items, look up photography scavenger hunts online, once you have captured those photos you can make a story or put some together for a Triptych or a collage. Above all take your time, post your picture, eliminate the rubbish and most of all have fun
