Location
This image was taken at Wanaka which is a popular ski and summer resort town in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand and is located at the southern end of Lake Wanaka.Time
This shot was taken around 7.00am. I remember setting the alarm for 6.00am to get into position for sunrise and hoping to beat the crowds that form to photograph the Wanaka Tree. I could not believe my luck on this day being the only person there to witness a beautiful dawn breaking over the lake.Lighting
I think the photo itself describes the lighting, in my opinion it was perfect.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 90D camera with a 15-85 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM lens mounted on a tripod. I also used a HD filter. The exposure was taken at 25 seconds @ f14 with a 250 isoInspiration
Having been to Wanaka a few years previously mainly to photograph the Wanaka Tree and being disappointed with not only my images but also the crowds I was determined to try for a better shot. I knew the crowds would be down as New Zealand had only recently opened its borders after Covid and having set up in the dark waiting for sunrise I could not believe my luck with the colours of dawn that I was witnessing over the lake. I ran off around 20 images before the sun actually rose which in the end was a disappointing sunrise with all the colours being washed out due to no cloud cover. I was so glad I arrived early and could not believe I was packing up before the next photographer arrived.Editing
No post-processing was undertaken on this image. In my camera bag
I normally carry two Canon camera bodies an 80D and 90D together with two telephoto Canon lenses a 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS USM and 15-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM as well as a macro 100mm 1:2.8 L IS USM. I also carry a canon flash and tripod on short hikes. I also carry a head light to set up in the dark.Feedback
If wanting to photograph sunrise arrive well before the advertised time as dawn often provides more colour.
