Location
Cape Disappointment on the southwest corner of Washington state is an area I’ve wanted to photograph during a king tide. I spent three days here over New Years weekend experiencing everything from calm seas, to gale force winds driving torrential rain to finally on the third day absolutely beautiful conditions with gorgeous skies and monster waves. During this epic day a brief, but intense, hail storm darkened the skies and filled the air with hail producing a very moody scene I was fortunate to capture.Time
I had been shooting the king tide wave action since about noon this day. The skies had been blue with nice cloud formations. Suddenly early afternoon the area began to grow dark as a storm front came in. The skies grew ominous and hail filled the air. I took shelter under some trees and kept shooting, not realizing what I had captured until later when processing the images.Lighting
Nature provided light conditions that helped produce such a moody scene. Dark skies filled with hail and the sun beginning to peek through just enough to highlight the monster waves. Post processing enhanced the overall results.Equipment
I used a Canon 1DX Mark II with Canon 70-200 lens. I chose to hand hold equipment so I could easily change locations through a crush of other photographers.Inspiration
I’ve seen other photos from this location depicting monster king tide waves and wanted to capture some of my own memories here. Fortunately after three days trying, everything came together for some great photos on the third day.Editing
Yes, I definitely enhanced the dark and moody feel of the image in post processing. Dehazing especially helped clean up the hail that filled the sky. I also highlighted the wave action to make it pop more in the final image. In my camera bag
When out on the road I normally carry a backpack filled with extra camera bodies and various sizes of lens, filters, spare batteries and a flash.Feedback
Nature is a fickle partner when taking photos. Patience, willingness to invest lots of time, and more patience, sometimes can pay off with exciting and unusual images that are your reward.
