Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home City of London, Ontario. A view of the Thames River that runs through London on a beautiful Fall evening.

Time

This was taken around 5 pm in the middle of September. I have been to this location many times at different times of the day but late afternoon/evening is when the light is the best to capture the vibrant colors.

Lighting

I waited for the sun to be in the right position to get the maximum effect of the leaves that were changing colors. I kept returning at different times of the day until I found the right time in the late afternoon/early evening.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D750 with the 24-120 kit lens on a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I love color in a photo and fall is the perfect time of year to get maximum color effects. Also looking at the turn in the river from this position leads the viewer down the photo to the end where the river turns and to the beautiful sky.

Editing

There was a bit of post processing using Luminar 4 done, mostly to the sky adding color, light and some clouds.

In my camera bag

My trusty Nikon D750 with the kit lens along with Nikkor 50mm prime F1.8 lens, a Sigma 105mm F2.8DG macro lens, an array of filters (polarizer, and variable ND filter), lens cleaning products, an extra battery, lens hood and extra lens caps and I always have my tripod in my car.

Feedback

The timing and the weather have to be right. I visited this location many times on different days and different times of the day to finally get the photo that I thought was almost perfect. I say almost perfect because I never know if by returning another day on another time I might get a better photo. It takes persistence and determination and eventually you will succeed in getting that perfect capture that stands out above your others.
