This is an amazing shot. How did you achieve this?

Thank you for the kind compliment. With this one I was using a prime lens so I set the aperture to give it a shallow depth, an extremely short exposure time, and then I literally just lined up the curb so that I had a leading line at that corner. With the shallow depth and a prime lens the focal point wasn't important as long as at least one small part of the curb is in focus. In this case I really liked the painted yellow transition to red on the curb so that is what I shot for. Let me know if you want my actual settings for the shot?

you have mesmerizing depth & skill. may i ask, what camera you use? i am having a hard time deciding on my next camera & your photo feels similar to the rich hues in film shots. i look forward to seeing more of your photos!

First, thank you so much for the extremely flattering compliment. I've always shot with a Sony a7 in one version or another. If I'm not mistaken this was my Sony a7ii. Sony is very capable of capturing those deep colors and hues you mentioned which can be deepened even further in the post shot editing. In the case of this one I did all of the editing in lightroom mobile.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo right outside the apartment building I was living at in Long Beach, California. It was my first legit attempt to shoot bokeh. Since I was using a 50mm prime lens I simply put the camera at the level I wanted it and snapped the image. I knew the camera would focus somewhere along the curb so I didn’t overcomplicate it.

Time

I was sitting around my apartment completely bored out of my mind. I remembered a spot on the sidewalk outside that always had water on so I grabbed my camera and headed out to experiment. By this point it was roughly 9pm.

Lighting

I used the light coming from the street lights and the street signals to give the shot all the color and light I wanted.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony a7ii using a Sony 50mm prime lens.

Inspiration

I was seeing lots of bokeh shots on Instagram and I’d never shot anything like that so I wanted to try it.

Editing

Yes, I typically just use Lightroom for shots like this. Occasionally I’ll use AuroraHDR but I didn’t use it on this shot.

In my camera bag

My Sony a7iii, 8mm fisheye lens, 14mm wide angle, Zeiss 16-35mm, 28mm prime, 50mm prime, and my 28-70mm lens. I use a MeFoto tripod and I occasionally use a remote shutter for long exposure shots.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to use the aperture setting to get your depth dialed in, set your exposure time, and let the camera choose the ISO unless you’re really worried about clarity.
