Behind The Lens

Location

This horse had just been delivered to Kentucky from Spain. My friend Alan purchased it for his wife who was training as a show horse rider.

Time

The shot was made at 3:03 pm on a hazy oand overcast May day.

Lighting

The overcast conditions actually helped the shot since the coat was quite reflective. The texture in the photo is marvelous.

Equipment

The camera was a Nikon D3 and a Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 lens was the lens of choice. The Paddock was sizable and it allowed me to catch the horse and fill the frame from any positition.

Inspiration

Alan had paid about $200,000 for the horse and shipping and was quite proud of the lines and pedigree of the horse. He requested pictures suitable for printing and framing as a gift for his wife.

Editing

This particular picure is one of three versions i processed. One was a simple jpg in SRGB color space. The other two versions were full resolution DNG files in Profoto RGB ; one in color and this version in black and white. The conversion was done in Silver Efex Pro plugin.

In my camera bag

Currently Nikon D5, D850 and the new Z7. Quite a few lenses and 2 tripods. One with a ball head medium weight and a heavier tripod with a gimbal Head. The shot above was hand held because the fences interfered with my framing.

Feedback

This shoot was fairly strait forward. I had a friend who accompanied me and shot the Friesian and felt good with what she shot after about 10 minutes. I kept shooting for almost an hour hoping for some better lighting conditions. I got lucky and the cloud cover lessened and this shot was close to the end of the hour. Really work the area your shooting. You really can't tell how well the conditions affect your photo from the back of your camera. My friend had no pictures worthy of printing.
