Behind The Lens

Location

The Model in this picture is Dakota Snow; A traveling model and photo event planner. She arranged for three models and 6 photographers to spend a day in an abandoned denim factory near Rome Georgia. This room was cavernous and the full bank of windows stretched at least 150 feet and the ceiling was at least 20 feet tall.

Time

The shot was taken just after 12 noon. The Sun was almost directly overhead so there was no bright spots to contend with. There was a heat wave to deal with, temperatures were in the mid 90's. The only device on hand was an old industrial fan which we used to help keep the silk aloft.

Lighting

Since we were lucky to have indirect natural light I chose to have the light primarily behind and to the model's right. My goal was to have the silhouetted model rim lit and the cloth to have most of the dramatic attention.

Equipment

Camera was a Nikon D850 with the Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Tripod and ball head came from Really Right Stuff. Focal length was 70mm , 1/160 sec. at f7. Iso was 320.

Inspiration

My travelling companion brought the 12 feet of red silk with the concept of this shot in his mind. Once we saw the light conditions and the fan we all tried to outdo each other with concepts.

Editing

Post was very strait forward. cropping, straitening, and balancing the light with the darks.

In my camera bag

I have Nikon D850 and D5 as my primary cameras. Depending on location and type of shoot I select lenses which I believe I will most likely use. Normally Nikkor 15-35mm f2.8, Nikkor 24-70 mm f28.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 are included. This shoot I knew there were models available so I also took Nikkor primes 85mm f1.4 and 105mm 1.4.

Feedback

During our shoot we were trying different combinations of material, fan placement and most importantly camera and model placement relative to the light. The backlit shots were much more pleasing than pictures taken with the light behind the photographer. The more traditional arrangement left the model and material with a more linear or flat look. Lastly I should mention this shot required three people to get the desired look. A photographer a model and a cloth thrower which is just out of frame. A leaf blower instead of an industrial fan may have set the sail more efficiently.
