Location
This image was captured in the eastern part of Arches National Park.Time
I got this shot at mid day when the light is normally not very good for such a shot, but it was a chilly March day and the air was crystal clear.Lighting
The spectacular clarity of the light really emphasized the sense of depth created by the three layers: the first group of rocks, then the background rock group, and finally the La Sal mountains twenty miles beyond in the far background.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 77d with an 18-135mm lens, handheld.Inspiration
The clarity of the air and the sense of great depth just stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't pass up an opportunity like that.Editing
I did apply a small amount of color enhancement and I removed a few distracting elements such as road signs. In my camera bag
When I am out for a landscape shoot I usually carry a tripod, two or three lenses, a selection of filters, extra batteries, a lens cleaning kit, an intervalometer/remote shutter switch, and my cellphone with various photographic apps.Feedback
Sit at the site long enough to absorb what is in front of you. Don't be averse to walking away with nothing if you can't really feel the image before you trip the shutter. Anyone can go to a place like Arches National Park and come back with *great* photos that will impress their family and friends but it takes something more to make a photograph that will stand out from the millions of shots of such a place that are carelessly posted to the internet every day.
