Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the north shore of the greatest of great lakes Superior. Just outside of Duluth Minnesota. A busy spot in the summer.

Time

My favorite time of the day is predawn as in this shot. The colors that come from the early morning light coming through the ice and reflecting from the snow can be mesmerizing to say the least.

Lighting

Winter on the north shore of lake Superior is always beautiful. Specially when we are gifted with thick broken masses of ice that stack in no patterns. Randomly reflecting light! Addicting for sure.

Equipment

I have been a Canon shooter for most of my shooting, but own many brands. This was shot with a Canon 7D , Sigma 17-50MM at 17mm. THe camera was mounted on a Slik 700DX tripod with a Slik ball head. Using a wired remote.

Inspiration

I am in love with winter on the shores of the biggest of the great lakes, Superior and the big lake has so much beauty to show. Even in the weather that would have most hiding next to the heater. The start of the new day in the middle of a lake full of huge ice shards is inspiration to get out in the -30F to catch the morning sun as it blankets the ice. It can be awe inspiring to say the least.

Editing

I am a guy who really shies away from the whole huge editing thing. I learned a long time before digital that getting it right in the camera is the best way for me. I have learned very minor things in editing software. So most everything I do has minimal editing. A color, contrast bump. Maybe details and texture but thats about the whole of it.

In my camera bag

Since this image was taken I have so upgraded my equipment. Now I go afield with two full frame Canons, 6D and 5DIII, Canon 20-105mm L, Sigma 120-400mm, Rokinon 14mm f2.8, Tamron 17-50 normally in the bag, but things change each outing. Sometimes the Nikon D7200 makes the bag as well. Normally you will find two remotes in tow and a few ND filters. Two tripods are normally along for the ride as well. I carry it all in a huge backpack and there in is my workout program.

Feedback

Capturing shots like this will require a certain fortitude and lots of layers!! One must never look at the thermometer and say "Too cold"!! Its never too cold if you dress for it and mentally prepare. I have regularly been out in the -30F range and loved every minute of it. The colder air the cleaner it will be. With todays clothing tech its pretty easy to stay out for long periods of time. Layers are the key! A love for the cold and the landscape will drive you to layer up and get to the lake!
