Behind The Lens

Location

My fiancé and I took a hike out in the Superstition Wilderness of Arizona. At the end of this particular trail there’s a water fall that only flows during the winter months with all the snow melt. As we were hiking a group of horsemen passed us. They were lit up perfectly by the cloudy sun!

Time

I took this photo around midday. We started early morning and this was about the end leg of our journey. The clouds were heavy in all directions but the sun was directly ahead and above us.

Lighting

With all the clouds in the sky and the sun shining brightly behind them I knew I had to expose for the sky in order to not get such a blown out image. It was a bit dark after the shot was taken but easily fixed in post.

Equipment

I used the Canon 80D with a Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 DC Macro.

Inspiration

Just the adventure of it! The horsemen crossing the rocks as the water trickled down. Their slightly silhouetted shapes carrying on towards the sun. It just seemed right!

Editing

Yes, I definitely brought out the shadows and used a cloudy white balance. Some vignetting and minor dehaze.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 80D with either my Sigma 17-70mm or the Canon 18-135mm. Extra batteries, my Slik USA travel tripod, and snacks... lots of snacks.

Feedback

Expose for the sky to get dramatic feels! You can always bring out the darkness in post. Just be careful, brightening a dark photo can generate noise. Play with the color sliders and don’t be afraid to blur some aspects of the photo using the dehaze tool!
